Pressurizing Your Fuel Tanks
As propellants are burnt and the level in the tank drops, so too does the pressure and this can compromise the flow of fuel. The inert gas helium (He) is used to fill this empty volume in the tank, thus maintaining the pressure necessary for the fuel to flow as specified to the spacecraft engine.
