Accelerate Postheating Cycle Times by up to 20%

What is Postweld Heat Treatment?
Commonly referred to as stress relief or just postheating, postweld heat treatment (PWHT) is a flame heating process carried out to maintain a metal’s strength and quality by reducing the possibility of later distortion. It is carried out directly after welding, sometimes before machining. In fact, if a welding task calls for workpiece preheating, it often also requires postheating.
In a controlled environment, a selected area of the weld is rapidly heated by a high temperature flame - often with a gas torch - to release diffusible hydrogen. The temperature range depends on the material’s composition, thickness and prior thermal or mechanical steps. With postweld heat treatment of carbon steels, for instance, the workpiece is typically heated to a temperature between 550°C and 600°C. The component is maintained at that temperature for a period before being allowed to cool very slowly. This controlled cooling process prevents further stresses – such as cold cracking – from building up. To reduce the rate of cooling, the fabrication may be surrounded by firebricks, covered by an insulating blanket, or exposed to a gradual reduction in the flame heating temperature.
Materials Suited to Postheating Include:
- Mild carbon steels
- High-strength steels
