Your Best Weld is Yet to Come!

Gone are the days when working with a plasma welding torch was a niche application - reserved for expert welding jobs that called for specialist experience. With ARCLINE PAW, you can take the productivity, quality and cost benefits you typically associated with plasma arc welding to a whole new range of applications - quickly and easily. With ARCLINE PAW, your best weld is yet to come!

What Is Plasma Welding?

Plasma arc welding (PAW) is similar to tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding - also known as gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) - in that it forms an arc between a pointed tungsten electrode and the workpiece. With plasma welding, the arc is struck between the tip of the non-consumable electrode and either the workpiece or the constricting nozzle. An inert gas is used to protect the molten metal from atmospheric contamination. The key difference between TIG and plasma welding, however, is that the plasma process concentrates arc energy more effectively, allowing you to keyhole weld, which reduces the use of filler metal and increases productivity.

Advantages of Plasma Arc Welding

As a result of these properties, PAW is considered a high-quality, extremely productive welding process. It is generally used for quality-critical applications where reliable outcomes are essential, such as welding high-alloyed steels and titanium. It also gives plasma arc welders a host of other advantages. You can look forward to a thinner heat affected zone (HAZ) and greater tolerance for variations in the distance between the torch and the workpiece. And you will typically spend less time preparing the welding joint.

Overcoming the Challenges of Plasma Arc Welding

Despite the compelling advantages, adoption rates of PAW have remained low because PAW is still often viewed as a highly complicated, sophisticated technique that requires a high level of skill and experience on the part of the welder. Consequently, many manufacturers and welding engineers opt for simpler techniques, even in cases where PAW would clearly be the better choice.

Nonetheless, the well-established quality and productivity gains of PAW make it an attractive option for a whole range of applications reaching beyond even the obvious use cases such as pipes and vessels. At the same time, advances in electronics are making more sophisticated welding power sources available at lower prices. This further increases the appeal of PAW. It’s hardly surprising then that so many welders are now looking for an easy way to switch to PAW welding. The time has come for a comprehensive, quick-start solution bundling equipment, best practices, technical support and consumables. ARCLINE PAW is the answer!
