Refrigeration and air conditioning processes can be segmented in a number of ways, including - most commonly - by customer process, equipment type and application process temperature.
All of these have an impact on the choice of refrigerant used. For example, the process temperature range impacts choice so as to ensure that the refrigerant remains in the correct phase (gaseous or liquid) and that the system provides adequate cooling capacity and optimum efficiency. The customer segment and equipment type can also impact the choice of refrigerant, due to the charge size, legislation, customer safety and many other reasons.
Linde has defined approximate process temperature ranges for refrigerant gases. As there is not a strict industry rule defining process temperature groups, these are provided as guidelines only.
