Whatever floats your boat …

Setting sail has always had an image of romance and excitement. And now waterborne excursions have the added novelty of a technical watershed – zero emissions.

Coordinated by the city of Hamburg, the “ZEMSHIPS” (zero emission ships) project brings together numerous hydrogen experts, including Linde Gas and ship operator Alstertouristik GmbH. In February, the city announced that it plans to build the first steamer in this new generation of eco-friendly, quiet vessels for Lake Alster.

The new ZEMSHIP will be fuelled by hydrogen supplied by Linde Gas. In PEM fuel cells, the hydrogen will be converted into electrical energy, generating enough power to propel some 100 tourists across the Alster in style. Not only will the ship eliminate emissions, it is also much quieter – so a candlelit dinner on deck will no longer be spoiled by the sounds of groaning engines.
