Mobile air conditioning systems are used across all transport modes including cars, buses, trucks and trains. Over the past twenty years, the costs of these systems have come down, and air conditioning systems are now standard in all but the lowest specification models.
Historically, most mobile air conditioning systems have used R12. As R12 has been phased out as part of the Montreal Protocol, automotive OEMS have turned to R134a as the global refrigerant of choice, with retrofit gases available for old R12 systems.
As the contribution of refrigerant gases to global warming has become an increasing issue, automotive OEMs have started to look for lower GWP replacements to R134a to become the long term refrigerant of choice. Aligned to this, in 2006 the European Commission published a new directive demanding the use of refrigerant gases with GWP of 150 or less in new car platforms from January 2011, and all cars from January 2017. This has spurred the industry to launch new low GWP solutions in Europe and also to meet similar legislation and customer demand in other geographies.
Linde Gas is able to offer the full range of refrigerant gases needed for any vehicle, whether you are retrofitting an old R12 system with R437A, using R134a to service the air conditioning system used in the majority of cars, or servicing a vehicle using new low GWP HFOs, such as Opteon® YF, or Natural Refrigerant R744. Linde can also offer refrigerants and associated services to support OEMs in their "first-fill" applications, especially if your volume demands are relatively low.
