Black liquor soap skimmings are collected in pulp mills and acidulated to form crude tall oil (CTO). This is normally done with sulfuric acid (H2SO4), which is a highly corrosive, hazardous substance.
However, up to 50% of the H2SO4 can be replaced with carbon dioxide (CO2). In a first step, the soap is acidulated with CO2. In a second step, the formed soap oil is separated from the bicarbonate brine and acidulated with H2SO4.
