All combustion processes release emissions. Nitrogen oxides (mainly NO and NO2) – known as NOx – are one of the main pollutants resulting from fossil fuel combustion. When these oxides interact with hydrocarbons and sunlight, they result in the formation of ground-level ozone, acid rain and photochemical smog. NOx can also have harmful effects on the respiratory system of human beings and impair plant growth. Increasingly restrictive legislation reﬂects the need for NOx emissions to be minimised or even eliminated.
Regulations on the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are also tightening. VOCs represent a health and environmental hazard and every effort must be made to avoid the release of unwanted VOCs.
Legislation is continually changing to protect the environment and human health against these effects, especially in the face of industrial expansion. Plant operator have two choices – they can either minimise the formation of emissions or clean them up post-combustion. Regardless of your preferred method, we have technologies, services and solutions to help.
These include ground-up solutions such as REBOX® and COROX LowNOx® to lower the formation of NOx during combustion. We also offer LoTOx™ low-temperature end-of-pipe abatement solutions. In addition, we have engineered various approaches to prevent or minimise the release of VOCs into the atmosphere, many of which are based on cryogenic condensation.
