World’s largest hydrogen fueling station opens

In November 2004, the world’s largest public fueling station opened in Berlin, Germany. It’s not just because of its size that this new station made the headlines. For the first time ever, liquid and compressed hydrogen are being offered alongside regular petrol and diesel services. Cars with fuel cells or modified combustion engines can simply pull up and take their pick.

The project was driven by the Clean Energy Partnership (CEP), which brings together numerous key automotive and infrastructure players including Linde Gas. The objective of CEP is to demonstrate that hydrogen can function as an everyday fuel, thus paving the way for a sustainable form of future mobility.

Tomorrow’s hydrogen fueling stations might look very different. At the top of the page, the giant water molecule is one of the visions for tomorrow’s hydrogen experience. The newly developed fueling system, located in one of the spheres, is patent-protected.

Getting green cars off the drawing board
True to the CEP’s sustainability vision, the Berlin station uses a renewable source of energy to produce gaseous hydrogen (CGH2) on site by means of electrolysis. Liquid hydrogen is supplied by Linde Gas. Linde uses renewable sources of energy to liquefy the hydrogen. It is stored in a super-isolated 10,000 liter tank. Linde also supplied the pump, piping and compressor systems for the CGH2, leveraging its high-booster system to compress the CGH2 from 15 to 350 bars. There are plans to upgrade the pump systems to 700 bars.

In the words of Dr. Joachim Wolf, Head of Hydrogen Solutions at Linde AG: ”Combined fueling stations are essential if we want green cars to get off the drawing boards and on to the roads. To set the ball rolling, the infrastructure must be in place.”

Down under
Moving over to the other side of the world, hydrogen is also spreading its wings. Linde Gas Austria helped open the first hydrogen fueling station on the fifth continent in Perth in August 2004.
